Abstract

With the continued advancement of digital technologies, the use of online platforms in foreign language learning has become increasingly prevalent. Among these, YouTube is considered an effective learning tool due to its abundant resources and high degree of flexibility. This study aims to investigate the current use of YouTube and propose solutions to enhance its effectiveness in developing Chinese listening comprehension skills among second-year Chinese Language majors at Dong A University. The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys with descriptive statistical analysis to examine usage frequency, learning purposes, modes of utilization, and the overall effectiveness of this platform. The findings indicate that YouTube is widely used, primarily for input-based purposes such as improving pronunciation and expanding vocabulary, while the development of higher-level listening comprehension skills remains relatively underemphasized. In addition, learners encounter several challenges, including inappropriate content selection, distraction from entertainment-oriented materials, and a lack of clear learning strategies. Based on these findings, the study proposes solutions focusing on enhancing learner autonomy, establishing systematic listening habits, and strengthening the guiding role of instructors. The results further confirm that the effectiveness of YouTube does not primarily depend on the platform itself, but rather on the learners’ strategies in utilizing it.
