DEVELOPING A MENTAL HEALTH-FRIENDLY SCHOOL ENVIRONMENT FOR HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN DA NANG CITY
Main Article Content
Abstract
Introduction: This study aimed to describe the level of emotional and behavioral difficulties among high school students and their perceptions of a mental health-friendly school environment, while also examining the association between these two factors and the predictive role of the school environment in students’ emotional and behavioral outcomes. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 400 students from three high schools in Da Nang City, Vietnam. Data were collected using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ-25) and a five-dimension school environment scale developed by the research team. The scale assessed safety, respect and non-stigmatization, teacher and school support, opportunities for positive development, and mental health awareness and attitudes. Results: The findings showed that the school environment scale demonstrated satisfactory psychometric properties, with Cronbach’s alpha coefficients ranging from 0.721 to 0.913 and an appropriate five-factor structure (KMO = 0.924, p < 0.001; explained variance = 65.0%). The mean score for the school environment was 3.77 ± 0.59, indicating a relatively positive perception among students, whereas the mean SDQ-25 score was 1.06 ± 0.31. Correlation analysis indicated that the school environment was significantly and negatively associated with emotional and behavioral difficulties (r = -0.42, p < 0.001). Regression analysis further revealed that the school environment was a significant predictor of SDQ-25 scores (β = -0.38, p < 0.001), even after controlling for individual and contextual variables. Contribution: The findings highlight the important role of the school environment in reducing students’ psychological difficulties and suggest that greater attention should be given to strengthening school-based support systems, reducing academic pressure, and fostering a non-stigmatizing school climate.
