An Analysis of Challenges and Solutions in Translating English Metaphors into Vietnamese: A Case Study of Fourth-Year English Language Students at Hanoi Metropolitan University.

Abstract
Translating metaphors is a complex task because it requires not only language competency but also culture and other people’s perceptions. Many EFL students are very good at English, but they still have trouble finding metaphors and using the right translation strategies. This study investigates the challenges encountered by fourth-year English language students at Hanoi Metropolitan University (HNMU) in translating English metaphors into Vietnamese and provides pedagogical recommendations to mitigate these challenges. The present study utilized a mixed-methods approach. A questionnaire and a translation task were used to collect quantitative data from 51 fourth-year English language students. Five chosen participants took part in semi-structured interviews to gather qualitative data. The results show that students have a lot of major challenges like not being able to recognize metaphors, relying too much on literal translation, not knowing enough about translation strategies and other cultures. The findings show that creative and culture-specific metaphors were more challenging to comprehend than conventional ones. Some pedagogical strategies including direct teaching in metaphor translation, utilizing authentic materials, and aligning to cultural context are highly recommended. The study contributes partly to enhance the teaching of EFL translation and promote useful tips for helping EFL students get better at translating metaphors.
