Abstract

This research uses a cross-sectional descriptive study and convenience sampling method to assess the association between sleep quality and academic performance of 128 first-year students at Ho Chi Minh City University of Physical Education and Sport. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and academic performance was evaluated based on grade point average for the semester. The research results showed that, the percentage of students with poor sleep quality (PSQI > 5) was 25.8%; the percentage of students with low academic performance (average or below) accounts for 28.9%; There was no statistically significant association between sleep quality and academic performance; A statistically significant negative linear relationship was found between bedtimes, times to fall asleep, and wake-up times with students’ academic performance.
