Abstract

To determine the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy (DR) and explore the associated risk factors. Objectives and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted from June 2023 to June 2024 involving 900 patients with type 2 diabetes in Da Nang City. Results: The survey of 900 participants revealed that 10.9 % of patients had DR. Of these, 54.1 % had mild non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR), followed by moderate NPDR (28.6 %), with smaller proportions in severe NPDR (9.2 %) and proliferative diabetic retinopathy (8.2%). No cases of blindness due to DR were observed. Logistic regression analysis identified four factors significantly associated with the presence of DR in patients with type 2 diabetes: alcohol consumption, dyslipidemia, LDL cholesterol levels, and irregular meal patterns/missed meals. Conclusion: We recommend strengthening early screening for DR among diabetic patients, alongside public education campaigns focusing on controlling blood lipids, maintaining regular eating habits, and limiting alcohol consumption to reduce the risk of developing DR. Additionally, intervention models to manage risk factors in diabetic patients should be implemented to prevent the progression of DR and its associated complications.
