Energy Supply and Green Economy
Main Article Content
Abstract
Vietnam’s Energy Supply towards Green Economy 2045 is talking about “Sustainable Energy Supply” situation in which Vietnam’s energy system will shift towards renewables and cleaner energy assessing their efficacy and adoption of clean energy technologies in the entire energy system. This means that Vietnam will need to navigating the energy system that can support the sustainable development to achieve Vietnam’s strategic goal of high-income country while addressing climate change simultaneously. The presentation will review the historical energy demand supply situation and forecast clear picture about the future energy demand. The presentation will also address the issues of decarbonisation in the electricity sector that still largely depend on fossil fuels such as gas and coal for power generation. It will seek the plausible solutions that can support the sustainable growth by redesigning the energy landscape towards low and zero emission energy technologies through the introduction of renewables (biomass, hydropower) and variable renewable energy such as wind and solar PV, and the possible option of nuclear power generation. The introduction of efficient type of battery electric vehicles will be studied for Vietnam’s low carbon energy transition in road transport sector. Furthermore, the role of Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) will be crucial to decarbonise the remaining emissions from power generation and industrial clusters such as cement industry. The emission in transportation sectors will need to be offset by negative emission technologies such as bioenergy and possibly the direct air capture with CCUS.
