Abstract

This article delves into the Enlightenment classic, Voltaire’s Treatise on Toleration, to explore its key ideas on religious freedom, tolerance, and religious diversity. In the tumultuous 18 th century, marked by widespread religious conflict and persecution, Voltaire vehemently criticized fanaticism and violence, while championing freedom of conscience and respect for religious differences. Through an analysis of Voltaire’s incisive arguments, this article illuminates the profound impact of this work on the development of religious freedom, not only in its historical context but also in contemporary society. Treatise on Toleration stands as not only a seminal philosophical work but also a powerful plea for peace and respect among religious communities, offering timeless values that remain relevant in today’s world.
