Abstract

In 1804, King Gia Long, founder of the Nguyen Dynasty, the last monarchy of Vietnam, chose the 越南 (Vietnam) as the national name. However, in ancient bibliographies in Sino-Nom, there are many documents, epitaphs, and relics recording that the 越南 (Vietnam) have appeared since the 14^th century and are used to refer to the territory and boundaries of the country. This paper uses historical official documents from the Nguyen Dynasty (Vietnam) and the Qing Dynasty (China) to explain how the 越南 (Vietnam) were chosen as the national name in 1804, cites Sino-Nom sources in ancient Vietnamese bibliographies to explain why the 越南appeared before 1804, and for what purpose were they used? This paper also hypothesizes that Lord Nguyen Phuc Chu (1675 - 1725) use of the 越南in the poems he composed implies?
