Abstract

Many research papers published by Vietnamese and Japanese scholars in recent years show that there has been a relationship between Vietnam and Ryukyū, an ancient island kingdom in the south of Japan, now Okinawa Prefecture (Japan) long-standing historical relationship, including maritime trade. These studies also suggest that Ryūkyū once imported Indica rice varieties from Vietnam to use as ingredients for making awamori, a specialty wine of the island nation of Ryūkyū. This research is based on Sino and Vietnamese historical documents and Malacca’s historical documents to clarify the relationship between Vietnam and Ryūkyū in history, including issues: import of Indica rice varieties from the Champa kingdom (now in Central Vietnam) and conflicts between Champa, Dai Viet and Malacca in the middle time, related to the relationship between Vietnam and Ryūkyū.
