Abstract
In Vietnam, research projects assessing the situation of social media addiction in students mainly use other scales and research samples from universities with majors other than physical education. This article applies a cross-sectional descriptive study to assess the situation of social media addiction on 302 first-year students at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Physical Education and Sport. The study was conducted through a survey questionnaire based on the Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale (BSMAS). The research sample is first-year students, who have just entered university, started an independent life and are less supervised by adults, have easy access to different forms of entertainment, especially on social media. Survey results showed that, the mean BSMAS score was 16.01 (SD = 4.80). The percentage of students having signs of social media addiction (BSMAS score ≥ 19) accounted for 22.85%. Male students tend to be more addicted to social media than female students, with the rate of social media addiction in the male group being 16.23% and in the female group being 6.62%.
